How Frigid Was Mount Washington this Week? Cold Enough to Freeze Spaghetti Mid-Bite.

How Frigid Was Mount Washington this Week? Cold Enough to Freeze Spaghetti Mid-Bite.

Travelers like to say that Mount Washington in New Hampshire has the worst weather in the world. The summit is only 6,288 feet above sea level, but you can see snow every month of the year and it has the highest land wind speed in the world. In winter, temperatures can be really extreme. How extreme? Take a look at this fork of spaghetti, cartoonishly frozen in the middle. There is no such problem in Olive Garden.
The disappointed diner was Ryan Knapp, a weather expert at the Mount Washington Observatory. The observatory is staffed throughout the year and collects weather data for researchers and meteorologists. Observers work in 12-hour shifts, in pairs during the day and singly at night.
Knapp was finishing his night shift and took his bowl of spaghetti to breakfast outside to watch the sunrise. The temperature hovered around -30° Fahrenheit and the wind was blowing at 65 miles per hour. Apparently it took Knapp too long to move the spaghetti from the plate to his mouth: the observatory’s Facebook page noted that the conditions “prevented them from biting” (or at least made them more likely to break a tooth).

Of course, Frozen Chef Boiardie is a relatively hilarious setting on the highest point in New England. The deceptively dangerous conditions of the peak have become fatal for dozens of tourists, climbers and skiers. A 2019 article in North American Mountaineering Accidents documented 212 summit incidents, including falls, avalanches, and weather-related deaths, between 1998 and 2019. Approximately 95% of them occurred between January and May. The keys to staying safe there: check the weather forecast at the observatory, pack the right layers, and be ready to turn around if (when) the weather changes.
However, the summit of Mount Washington deserves a cautious approach. Some physical discomfort is guaranteed, but it will likely be paired with stunning views to make it worth it.
