Types of Tourists Worldwide
In this blog-post we are gonna discuss major types of tourists all over the world.
Wealthy people have always traveled to far-flung corners of the world to see great buildings, works of art, learn new languages, experience new cultures and taste different cuisines. In recent decades, there has been an upward trend in tourism, and domestic or international trips for short trips are now very common. Tourists have a wide range of budgets and tastes and many resorts and hotels have been developed to cater to them.
While global definitions of tourism and tourist are desirable; in practice, tourists are a heterogeneous, non-homogeneous group with different personalities, demographics, and experiences.
Types of Tourists
We can explain types of tourists according to four main features related to the nature of their trip.
Let’s get started…
National and International Tourists
A basic distinction can be made between national and international types of tourists, although this distinction is blurred in many parts of the world (eg in the European Union). Domestic tourism refers to the travel of residents within their country of residence. There are rarely any currency, language or visa implications, and domestic tourism is more difficult to measure than international tourism. As a result, little attention is paid to domestic tourism. In contrast, international tourism involves travel outside the country of residence and may have currency, language and visa implications.
Depending on the Organization of the Trip
The type of tourists can be classified on the basis of types of travel services purchased, for example:
- An inclusive tour where two or more components of a trip are purchased together and paid at the same price;
- Self-organization of a trip, in which the traveler purchases various elements of the trip separately.
- Solo travel, which is a combination of the two and is becoming more common due to the use of the Internet to purchase travel.
- Distance traveled, which is used to distinguish between long-distance tourism (commonly understood as travel of at least 3,000 kilometers) and short or medium-distance tourism (involving shorter trips). This is important in terms of aircraft marketing and operation (and has implications for carbon emissions).
Purpose of the Visit
Tourists can also be classified by “category of purpose of visit”. These types of tourists are not only used for statistical purposes, but are also useful for tourism marketing. The terms “tourism” and “travel” are often used interchangeably. However, travel has the same definition as tourism, but it implies a more rewarding journey. Thus, a trip can be made for pleasure or to achieve some specific goal, for example, an IT specialist goes to a site to meet with a client on his project. Therefore, “tourists” can be conditionally divided into the following three categories:
Recreation and Entertainment
This includes holidays, sports and cultural tourism, and visits to friends and family. These types of tourists travel for pleasure. Recreational tourism has grown strongly in recent times due to lifestyle changes; people’s consumption pattern, the growing leisure needs stress relief and rejuvenation. Pleasure trips can be taken for leisure, sports, educational projects, school trips, family outings, weekend outings, etc.
Other Tourism Purposes
This includes educational and health tourism. While a tourist visa does not allow its holder to join a course of study, a student visa holder can travel around the country and enjoy sightseeing and meetings. Educational tourism is developing due to the growing popularity of teaching and learning and the development of technical competence outside the classroom environment.
In educational tourism, the main purpose of a tour or leisure activity includes visiting another country to experience a culture, study tours, or practicing and applying skills learned in the classroom in another setting, such as an International Education Program. Practical training. Health tourism is a broader term for travel aimed at treatment and the use of medical services. It covers a wide range of health tourism, ranging from preventive and restorative treatment to rehabilitation and therapeutic travel. Health tourism is a related area.
Business and Professionals
This includes meetings, conferences, missions, promotions and business travel. These types of tourists travel to satisfy their work-related needs, such as attending business meetings, conventions, conferences, or to perform any purpose that is not related to the requirements of the job. Business tourism consists of traveling to a destination away from home or a place of work.
This is a type of trip for professional rather than personal purposes. The types of tourists in business tourism include incentive trips, exhibitions and fairs, conferences and meetings, corporate events.
There are many other ways to classify tourists. They range from simple demographic and tourist classifications through their lifestyle and personality, to their risk perception and familiarity, and postmodern interpretations of consumers and goods. However, an increasingly relevant approach to modern tourism is the classification of tourists according to their level and type of interaction with the destination. We can also distinguish many types of tourism, such as historical, cultural, urban, rural, ecological and nature tourism as we did for types of tourists.

Challenges in the Tourism Industry
The main challenges in tourism are taxes, tourism marketing, infrastructure issues, and cross-border and safety regulations. Too many tourist destinations are not ready for visitors. Sometimes tourists or travelers may find tourism marketing to be excessive. Another major issue that the travel industry is facing is rate fluctuations and rising prices. It seems that new challenges are emerging that are rapidly affecting the industry as a whole.
What comes with tourism? What awaits the tourism sector in the coming years? This is a question that all professionals in the travel industry would like to answer. Let’s take a look at some of the challenges in tourism industry and what the future looks like.
Challenges in Tourism
Here is the list of top challenges in tourism industry is facing today.
Let’s get started…
Impact of Coronavirus on Global Tourism
COVID-19 proved to be one of the greatest challenges in tourism. The health crisis caused by the coronavirus has hit the global economy and, above all, the tourism industry hard. The World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) predicts a drop in tourism revenue from $300 billion to $500 billion in 2020, a third of the $1,500 billion received in 2019.
Challenges the practices of the tourism industry and draws attention to a range of issues such as poor risk management in the tourism industry, viral globalization and the movement of tourists across borders due to illness. It is also an opportunity to rethink the tourism industry from a critical perspective. There are several areas for potential transformation and transition towards responsible, sustainable and socially innovative tourism.
Holiday Prices and Inflation
One of the major challenges in the tourism industry is currency fluctuations. The inability to know the value of a currency means that long-term tourism prices are particularly difficult to predict, and the effects of this currency volatility are already affecting several tourism support systems. The tourism industry is seasonal and does not guarantee an income stream throughout the year, making it difficult to establish a common business.
Inflation is rising at an alarming pace, and restaurants have to raise prices or reduce service levels. Transport companies have been hit hard. The aviation industry is especially vulnerable. Airlines depend on both the food industry and the fuel industry. Already on the sidelines, airlines can do nothing but cut services and raise prices. The result of this situation is that tourists refrain from expensive holidays, which further affects the tourism sector as a whole.
Taxes and Tourism
The tourism industry is a highly taxed sector in some countries which is one of the most important challenges in tourism industry. Various taxes apply throughout the industry, from tour operators, carriers and airlines to hotels, and they include service tax, luxury tax, transport tax, aviation fuel and various transport taxes. Also, these tax rates tend to vary from state to state. All of these taxes end up being passed on to travelers in one way or another, making it difficult for them to rise.
Travel risk and safety
Safety will always be the top consideration for the traveler. Security problems had also been major challenges in tourism growth for several years. Insufficient law and order, terrorist attacks and political unrest have a negative impact on the feelings of foreign tourists. Despite economic growth, tourism is vulnerable to natural and man-made shocks, unexpected events that undermine travelers’ confidence in a destination, whether the risk is real or perceived.
Events in the 21st century have already drawn attention to the travel safety risks associated with terrorism and political groups. Tourism is also affected by natural disasters such as pandemics, tsunamis, earthquakes, floods, volcanic eruptions and avalanches. A crisis can be defined as any unexpected event that affects travelers’ trust in a destination and interferes with normal functioning.
Regulatory and border issues
Regulatory issues such as visa procedures are considered obstacles. Complicated visa processes keep tourists away from some destinations. A series of projects in the tourism infrastructure segment and in the hotel industry are delayed due to non-attainment of licenses and approvals on time.
However, in order to capitalize on the benefits of the tourism sector, the government should aim at creating proper infrastructure, speedy clearances, and make effective policies to regulate the tourism sector and to gain the confidence of foreign tourists.
Technological drivers of change
Technology is rapidly penetrating all spheres of life. The future of tourism will be defined and supported by technology. The Internet has leveled the playing field for tourism marketing. A good website means small, outlying destinations can compete on equal footing with the travel giants. The convergence of information and communication technologies will allow tourism companies to be more efficient and competitive.
Qualified Human Resources
The challenges facing the tourism sector can only be successfully addressed by a well-educated, well-trained, bright, energetic, multilingual and entrepreneurial workforce who understands the nature of tourism and is professionally trained. The high quality of professional staff in the field of tourism will allow companies to gain a competitive advantage and provide added value to their services.
A quality tourism workforce can only be achieved through the high standards of modern tourism education and training. Tourism education and training involves the transfer of knowledge, concepts and methods specific to the tourism industry, but based on the core disciplines and topics of areas such as geography, finance and marketing.
The future of tourism is exciting and tourism is a difficult sector to predict. Each of the drivers of the future that we have outlined above has an impact on its own, but when combined, they create a powerful force shaping the future of tourism.
Top 5 Asian destinations
If there is something that we cannot deny, it is that Asia is in fashion. For many reasons this continent is one of the most chosen for our vacations: mostly cheap destinations, flights at very reasonable prices, exoticism in many cases or very different cultures are just some of the reasons why Asia is one of the destinations more fashionable. In this case, after our experience traveling through some of them, we leave you with a selection of what we believe are some of the 10 best Asian destinations .
1- Sri Lankan
One of the least known countries, but at the same time more fashionable in recent times. With a fairly small extension in relation to other Asian destinations, Sri Lanka is the perfect destination to enjoy a unique culture, dreamlike landscapes, incredible beaches and people who will make you spend unforgettable days.
We recommend a trip of at least two weeks to be able to enjoy most of its most touristic places such as the Cultural Triangle, the Highlands or the southern beaches, where you can relax after an incredible trip to Sri Lanka .
If you are looking for a different Asian destination , but with great potential, Malaysia should be your choice. With idyllic beaches, a unique culture and delicious cuisine, this is one of the destinations that will not disappoint you and to which you will surely want to return again and again. Although the recommendation would be to travel to Malaysia for as long as you could, two weeks is enough time to get to know the most touristic places in addition to spending a few days on one of its postcard beaches.
Another of the best Asian destinations is without a doubt Japan. A country where surprises are around every corner and where you will find yourself between the most absolute tradition and the most incredible future just by crossing the street.
Contrary to popular belief, a trip to Japan is much cheaper than it may seem at first glance. Booking with some time it is easy to get accommodation for two people for an average of 50 euros in cities like Kyoto or Tokyo.
We recommend traveling for an average of 2 weeks to get to know some of the most touristic cities such as Kyoto, Tokyo and Osaka, as well as their surroundings. And if you have a little more time, you can choose to go up to Fuji or make a trip to the Japanese Alps, twoessential places to see in Japan .
The Philippines is another of the most fashionable Asian destinations today and one of those countries that you have surely thought of at some point.
Despite what it may seem, flying to the Philippines is not that expensive, being able to find flights for less than 500 euros, which will take you directly to the most incredible paradise.
Incredible green rice fields, amazing fauna and paradisiacal beaches are waiting for you to discover them and fall in love with one of the most impressive countries in the world.
Considered by many to be one of the most incredible paradises on and off the water, the Maldives is an unforgettable trip whether you plan it as a one-off trip or as a complement to Sri Lanka.
In our case we combined it with the latter and we have to say that it was one of the most incredible experiences we have ever had.
We recommend a stay of 5-7 days, plus the days of transfers, in order to enjoy it to the fullest. Contrary to what it may seem, we assure you that you will not get tired of lying in a hammock in front of infinite palm trees that seem to be taken from a painting.
White sand beaches, palm trees and incredible blue waters are waiting for you. You dare?
